LD204 board hears plans for huge Asian shopping center off Route 59, New York Street: Mayor Richard Irvin told the board retail areas like Yorkshire are dinosaurs that are "dying off and becoming extinct," and the city needs to do something to invigorate those areas by creating destination locations.

"We have the opportunity here to create one of the largest Asian developments of this kind in the United States of America," Irvin said.

David Dibo, executive director of the Aurora mayor's Office of Economic Development, said the Pacific Square is proposing to invest $10 million into the 365,000 square feet of existing retail space that will include a supermarket and food court, dining and entertainment spots, green space and a garden, and space for education-, beauty- and spa-type uses.

'Trend setting' Asian shopping center proposed for Aurora would be largest in U.S., officials say": "Against this backdrop, the city has been working with Pacific Square in what we believe is an exciting, timely and extremely creative means not only to address these trends, but to energize a corridor in a manner that can very well be trend setting on a national basis," Dibo said in the memo. 

He estimated the amount of the total inducements from the city would be about $15 million. According to some ideas floated in the material provided the school board, the new center could include a supermarket and food court, dining and entertainment spots, green space and a garden, educational and beauty and spa type of uses.

Aurora Plaza May Become Biggest Asian Shopping Center In U.S.: The 360,000 square foot Yorkshire Plaza is currently home to Best Buy, Planet Fitness, Pier 1 Imports, and other shops and restaurants. It is not clear how the proposed revisions would impact these businesses.
